Tigers Upset Sixth-Ranked Southwestern in SCAC Semifinal
Jackson, Mississippi - The fifth-seeded Trinity Tigers upset the No. 1 seed (and sixth-ranked) Southwestern Pirates 23-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-22 in the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament at Millsaps College on Saturday.
Trinity (22-15) advanced to Saturday's 8:15 p.m. title match, and will take on the second-seeded and defending SCAC champion Colorado College Tigers. Colorado College, ranked No. 13 in the nation, defeated sixth-seeded Millsaps 3-1 in the semifinals.
The winner of the championship match will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Trinity's Meredith Erwin tied her team season-high of 23 digs (in a four-set match), against Southwestern. Sara Robertson contributed 22 digs, Leslie Greem had 17, Maryn Swierc accounted for 15, and Madison McMahon chalked up 13. Swierc also amassed 46 assists at the setter's positiion.
McMahon led the Tigers with 19 kills, and Catharine Found added 16, along with seven blocked shots. Maddy Hazelwood, who hit .333 (eight kills, three errors,.15 total attacks), had five blocks in the match.
