Trinity Beats Birmingham-Southern to Advance to SCAC Semifinals
Jackson, Mississippi - The fifth-seeded Trinity Tigers advanced to Saturday's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament semifinals by defeating Birmingham-Southern College 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
Trinity (21-15) took out fourth-seeded Birmingham 25-19,
26-24, 25-18 in the quarterfinals. The Tigers opened the tournament
with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 win over No. 12 Sewanee: The University
of the South earlier in the day. The tournament is being
hosted by Millsaps College.
The Tigers will meet the winner of top-seeded Southwestern - ranked
sixth in Division III - and No. 9 Dallas in the semifinals on
Saturday at 11:15 a.m. The championship match is slated for 8:15
p.m., with the winner guaranteed a slot in the NCAA Division III
playoffs.
Madison McMahon set a team season-high for a three-set match,
recording 16 kills against the Panthers. She also tied Maryn Swierc
for the lead in digs, with 11. Swierc shelled out 29 assists and a
Tiger-best three service aces in the match.
Meredith Erwin added 10 digs on the defensive side. Desie Baker was the leader in blocks, chalking up four, while Maddy Hazelwood recorded three blocks. Hazelwood and Catharine Found both finished with seven kills in the match.
