Trinity Defeats Loyola and Ninth-Ranked UW-Platteville on Friday
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers opened their Trinity Fall Classic with two tightly played victories Friday night in Sams Gym.
Trinity (3-0), ranked 29th in the NCAA Division III, first rallied from an 0-2 deficit to beat Loyola-New Orleans (an NAIA scholarship school) 32-34, 24-26, 28-26, 25-16, 16-14. The Tigers then upset Wisconsin-Platteville, ranked ninth in Division III, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 26-24.
In the match with the Loyola Wolfpack, the Tigers started their comeback by hitting .304 in the third game, .500 in the fourth, and .333 in the fifth.
Junior outside hitter Madison McMahon led Trinity with 28 kills, and served up two aces, while chalking up 11 digs. First-year setter Bridget Bohman amassed 35 assists and 17 digs. Two seniors led in blocks, as middle blocker Maddy Hazelwood and right-side player Catharine Found each made seven. Hazelwood also hit .343 in the match. Junior libero Meredith Erwin registered 28 digs.
Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Maryn Swierc had 23 digs and two service aces. First-year setter Jenny Epperson amassed 27 assists, while sophomore outside hitter Sara Robertson held a blistering .630 hitting percentage.
Prior to the start of the match with Platteville, an emotional tribute was held before more than 2,000 Tiger volleyball fans in a packed Sams Gym, honoring the late mother and sister of Found, from Iowa City, Iowa. She suffered the loss of both within the past month. Purple T-shirts were given to spectators - with the words "Team Found" - as a representation of the fight against pancreatic cancer. Found's mother died of the illness a short time ago.
McMahon, Found, and Robertson led the Tigers in kills, with 13, 12, and 11, respectively. Found hit .500 in the match-up, and blocked seven shots. Robertson also accounted for nine digs.
Epperson shelled out 24 assists and 11 digs, while Bohman had 19 assists and 11 digs. Hazelwood was the blocks leader, with nine. Junior libero Meredith Erwin led the Tigers in digs, with 23.
Trinity will take on East Texas Baptist at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, and Hardin-Simmons at 2:30 p.m.
