Trinity Opens SCAC Tournament With Thriller Over Austin College

San Antonio - The fourth-seeded Trinity Tigers fought off a strong rally to edge the No. 5 Austin College Kangaroos 25-17, 28-26, 12-25, 24-26, 15-13 Friday in the quarterfinals of the SCAC Championship Tournament in Sams Gym.
 
Trinity (22-14) advanced to Saturday's semifinals at 11:15 a.m., and will take on top-seeded Colorado College.
 
Tiger junior right-side player Catharine Found hit .361 in the match, with 17 kills, four errors and 36 total attacks. She also blocked three shots. Senior setter Caiti Troyer dished out 49 assists, and registered 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Madison McMahon led Trinity with 21 digs, while producing 13 kills. Sophomore libero Meredith Erwin added 20 digs for the Tigers.
 
Junior middle blocker Desi Baker blocked five shots, and chalked up 14 kills. Maddy Hazelwood, also a junior middle blocker, had four blocks. Senior defensive specialist Emily Hilliard made 18 digs. First-year setter Maryn Swierc fired in three service aces, and accounted for 12 digs.
 
In the second set, won by Trinity, the Tigers fought off three Austin College set points to take a 2-0 lead. But the 'Roos his .378 in the third set, and won the fourth, to even the contest at 2-2.
 
The winners of the semifinals will play for the SCAC Championship at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. At stake is an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The semifinal losers tangle for third place at 6 p.m.
