Trinity Splits Matches to Open First Day of Fall Classic Tournament
San Antonio – The Trinity Tigers volleyball team, ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Division III, split its matches Friday at their Trinity University Fall Classic in Sams Gym.
Trinity (5-3) blanked Pacific (Ore.) 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 in the opener. Christopher Newport (Va.), ranked 13th nationally, beat the Tigers 25-22, 25-16, 26-24 in the second match.
Trinity first-year setter Maryn Swierc led the team in kills,
with eight, and hit .333 (21 total attacks, one error). Swierc also
had nine digs. Senior setter Caiti Troyer made 24 assists, and led
in digs, with 17. Sophomore libero Meredith Erwin had 13 digs, and
senior defensive specialist Emily Hilliard chalked up a team
season-high four aces, and accounted for 10 digs. Junior middle
blocker Maddy Hazelwood blocked three shots.
The Tigers hit a season-high .388 against Pacific (43 kills, 85
total attacks, 10 errors), and limited the Boxers to .154 (24
kills, 78 total attacks, 12 errors).
Hazelwood led the match with 11 kills, and hit .625 (16 total
attacks, one error). First-year outside hitter Sara Robertson added
10 kills, and registered .529 (17 total attacks, on error) in
hitting. Troyer accounted for 29 assists and nine digs. Erwin also
had nine digs, and Baker blocked two shots.Hilliard fired in four
aces.
The Tigers take on East Texas Baptist at 11 a.m. Saturday, and wrap
up the tournament with a 6 p.m. match against Puget Sound.
