Russell McMindes is in his second season as head coach of the Trinity Tigers men's tennis team and first for the women's tennis team.

In his second season Coach McMindes led the team to win yet another SCAC Championship. He had three individuals that were ITA Scholar-Athletes as well as ITA All-Americans. 

During his first season at the Tigers helm, Coach McMindes guided Trinity to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. He was also named SCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year.

Trinity advanced to the NCAA Division III postseason tournament, and won West Regional. The Tigers moved on to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2007. Trinity finished the season with an 18-10 dual-match record.

In addition, juniors Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal fought their way to the NCAA Doubles Championship final match. It marked the first time a Trinity team had accomplished that feat since 2001.

Coach McMindes spent seven seasons as the Tiger men's assistant coach. In 2009, coach McMindes was named the ITA West Region Men's Tennis Assistant of the Year.

He was a three-year letter winner for the Tigers and was a member of Trinity's 2000 NCAA Division III national championship team. Coach McMindes earned All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for three years. Prior to joining the Trinity program, Coach McMindes played for one season for Oklahoma Christian University, and became a Tiger his sophomore year.

Coach McMindes earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity in engineering science in 2002, with a concentration in chemical engineering.  A resident of San Antonio, he was the Clemens High School valedictorian in 1997.

A talented instructor of tennis, Coach McMindes was a teaching professional at the San Antonio Country Club, as a United States Professional Tennis Association Certified Pro.

Jacob McMindes

Jacob McMindes is the assistant coach of the Tiger men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Coach McMindes became the men’s assistant in 2009, and the women’s in 2011.

His older brother, Russell, is the Tigers head coach.

In 2011, Jacob McMindes was named the ITA West Region Men’s Assistant of the Year, a similar award received by Russell McMindes.

Coach McMindes graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in May 2009, with a Bachelor of Science in engineering management.

He played four years for the successful Cardinal program, which competes in the NCAA Division II. During his playing career, Coach McMindes was named to the Heartland Conference First Team, and was second-team all-region in doubles. He made the Heartland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2007.

A native of San Antonio, Coach McMindes graduated from Samuel Clemens High School.

Coach McMindes is also a teaching professional at the Alamo Heights Tennis Center. He conducts s after-school clinics for McAdoo High Performance Tennis at the center.

Butch Newman

Butch Newman is Trinity University’s Director of Tennis.

Coach Newman’s responsibilities include developing outstanding on-campus tennis facilities and recruiting academically qualified and athletically talented student-athletes. He also is continuing a strong relationship with former tennis student-athletes from the NCAA Division I and Division III eras.

He coached the Tiger men’s team starting in 1986, and guided the Trinity women from 1991 to 2008. Coach Newman led both Tiger teams to the NCAA playoffs and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. He was named national coach of the year on three occasions.

A crowning achievement occurred in 2000, when the Trinity men and women captured the NCAA Division III Championships, minutes apart and in two different states.

Coach Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from Trinity in 1965.

He was a two-time All-American at Trinity in 1963 and 1965, playing for legendary coach Clarence Mabry. Coach Newman’s 53-2 singles record is the best in Tiger history.
Coach Newman was inducted into the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
