Trinity Women's Tennis Players Elected to All-SCAC Team
San Antonio – Three Trinity University
Tigers have been elected to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Women’s Tennis team.
Sophomore Katie Griffith and junior Katy Poettcker made the All-SCAC Team, and first-year player Thavindra Ekanayake was selected for the Honorable Mention Team.
Trinity (12-12, 10-5 against NCAA Division III opponents), led by second-year head coach Ryan Takao, won third place at the three-day SCAC Championship Tournament held at North Little Rock, Ark. The Tigers, now ranked 28th nationally (third in the West Region), started the event with an 8-1 victory over Centre. Sewanee then edged Trinity 5-3 in the semifinals, but the Tigers bounced back to defeat Rhodes 8-1 in the third-place match.
Griffith, of Spokane Wash. (Farris), made the All-SCAC Team for the second straight year. She went 2-1 at Nos. 1and 2 singles at the tournament held at Burns Park Tennis Center. Grifith teamed with Ekanayake, of Sri Lanka, to register a 3-0 record at No. 2 doubles. The Tiger tandem was earlier selected for the SCAC All-Tournament Team.
Griffith is currently ranked sixth in West Region singles, and Ekanayake, who went 2-1 at the SCAC tourney (in Nos. 2 and 3 singles), is 17th.
Poettcker is from Colleyville, Texas (Heritage).
