Trinity Women's Tennis Takes Third Place at SCAC Tournament

North Little Rock, Ark. – The second-seeded Trinity Tigers women won third place with an 8-1 victory Sunday over the No. 4 Rhodes Lynx at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament at Burns Park Tennis Center.

Trinity (12-12, 10-5 against NCAA Division III opponents), ranked 19th nationally, bounced back after a 5-3 semifinal loss to third-seeded Sewanee. DePauw repeated as SCAC champion with a 9-0 win over Sewanee in the final.

The Tigers opened the match by winning two of three doubles. Katie Griffith and Thavindra Ekanayake took No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Carolina Sanchez and Anna Moak. Megan Jackson and Kassie Seger won No. 3 doubles, with an 8-2 victory over Courtney Martin and Leisy Ruddock.

Rhodes’ only point of the match was No. 1 doubles, as Anna Beth Sanford and Alice Havner edged Katie Budinsky and Erin Jamison 9-8.

Griffith outlasted Sanford 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 (tiebreak instead of third set) at No. 1 singles, and Ekanayake defeated Havner 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. Budinsky took No. 3 singles, beating Sanchez 6-2, 6-2, and Jackson was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Alex Phipps at No. 4. Seger beat Aya Kato 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Jamison rounded out the lineup at No. 6, beating Moak 7-6, 6-0.
