Sewanee Beats Trinity Women's Tennis in SCAC Semifinals
North Little Rock, Ark. – The third-seeded Sewanee Tigers beat the No. 2 Trinity Tigers 5-3 Saturday in the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament semifinals at Burns Park Tennis Center.
Trinity (11-12, 9-5 against NCAA Division III opponents), will play fourth-seeded Rhodes at 11 a.m. Sunday for third place. Sewanee meets defending champion DePauw in the title match at 8 a.m.
The Tigers, ranked 19th nationally, took a 2-1 lead after doubles, over No. 30 Sewanee. Katie Griffith and Thavindra Ekanayake of Trinity won No. 2 doubles, beating Julia Wood and Kathleen Catherall 8-1. The tightly played No. 3 doubles match went to Trinity, as Megan Jackson and Kassie Seger beat Laura Szyperski and Lindsay Wilburn 9-8. Sewanee’s Jenny Liles and Michelle Flume took No. 1 doubles, with an 8-4 win over Katie Budinsky and Erin Jamison.
Sewanee won four of the five completed singles matches. Liles beat Griffith 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Flume defeated Ekanayake 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot. Wood beat Budinsky 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. The clincher for Sewanee was at No. 4 singles, as Wilburn came from behind to beat Jackson 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Trinity’s Seger captured No. 5 singles, with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Derry Roberson. The No. 6 singles match between Trinity’s Jamison and Sewanee’s Catherall did not finish.
