Trinity Women's Tennis is No.2 Seed at SCAC Tournament

San Antonio – The Trinity Tiger women’s tennis team will be the second seed at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championship Tournament, which starts Friday at North Little Rock, Ark.

Trinity (10-11) is ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III, and will play the winner of the Centre and Austin College match at 2 p.m. Friday at Burns Park Tennis Center. The Tigers, led by second-year head coach Ryan Takao, stand at 8-4 against Division III opponents.

The championship match is slated for 8 a.m. Sunday, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

In 2009, the Tigers advanced to their 17th SCAC Championship match in 18 years, but fell 9-0 to DePauw. This year, DePauw is ranked ninth nationally, and is the tournament’s top seed. Sewanee: The University of the South is the third seed, ranked 30th in Division III.

Trinity won a record 15 consecutive SCAC Championships, from 1992-2006.  Takao served as an assistant coach from 1997 until he took over head coaching duties in 2008.  Butch Newman, who is now the Director of Tennis at Trinity, coached the Tiger women from 1991-2008.

Led by Coach Newman and Coach Takao, the Tigers captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2000.
