Trinity Women's Tennis Edged by UT-Tyler

Tyler, Texas – The host UT-Tyler Patriots edged the Trinity women’s tennis team 5-4 Friday afternoon, snapping the Tigers’ three-match winning streak.

Trinity, ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division III, and fourth in the West Region, now stands at 6-11 overall. Trinity dropped to 6-4 in Division III matches after the loss to the 29th-ranked Patriots (No. 5 in the region).

The Tigers started the match by winning two of three in doubles. Katy Poettcker and Kassie Seger beat Michelle Hagler and Ashley Albro 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Thavindra Ekanayake and Katie Griffith won No. 3 doubles, beating Lauren Nielsen and Heather Harmon 8-4. The Patriots won No. 2 doubles, as Sydni Hermsdorf and Emily McCrae beat Erin Jamison and Katie Budinsky 8-4.

Texas-Tyler won four of the six singles matches to earn the overall victory.

The Patriots clinched the match, as they won Nos. 3 and 5 singles simultaneously. Hermsdorf beat Ekanayake 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, and Lauren Giovannini defeated Megan Jackson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5

Griffith took No. 2 singles for Trinity, beating Nielsen 6-1, 6-2. Budinsky dispatched Albro 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Hagler won No. 1 singles for Texas-Tyler, with a three-set 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Poettcker. Trich beat Seger 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 6 slot.

The Tigers take on SCAC opponent Rhodes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
