Tiger Women's Tennis Finishes Strong Weekend Against SCAC Teams

Georgetown, Texas – The Trinity Tigers women’s tennis team, ranked No. 20 in the NCAA Division III, wrapped up its SCAC weekend with 9-0 shutouts over Southwestern and Hendrix Saturday.

Trinity, ranked fourth in the West Region, upped its overall record to 6-10, and now stands at 6-3 in Division III matches. The Tigers beat Austin College, ranked 14th regionally, by a score of 9-0 on Friday evening.

The Tigers took on host Southwestern on Saturday morning.

Katy Poettcker and Kassie Seger defeated Emily Gutzmer and Sara Fitzsimmons 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Katie  Budinsky and Erin Jamison were 8-4 winners over Victoria DeLeon and Mary Pennington. Katie Griffith and Thavindra Ekanayake took No. 3 doubles, beating Jessica Gaines and Lali Satyavada 8-5.

In singles, Poettcker took the No. match, defeating Deleon 6-1, 6-0. Griffith won No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Pennington. Ekanayake was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles over Gaines. Budinsky prevailed at No. 4 singles, beating Satyavada 6-0, 6-3. No. 5 singles went to Megan Jackson, who beat Gutzmer 6-4, 6-3. Seger rounded out the match at No. 6 singles, defeating Fitzsimmons 6-0, 6-1.

Hendrix was Trinity’s afternoon opponent.

Poettcker and Seger won No. 1 doubles, beating Caitlin Stevens and Arden Brazzeal 8-2. Jamison and Budinsky were 8-3 winners over Anne French and Hannah Jackson at No. 2 doubles. Ekanayake and Griffith dispatched Abby Cape and Sara Croissant 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Tigers once again dominated the singles matches.

Poettcker defeated Stevens 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Griffith beat Brazzeal 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 slot. Ekanayake won No. 3 singles, beating Jackson 6-0, 6-1, and Budinsky took No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over French. Trinity’s Jackson beat Dorothy Shuler 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Seger won No. 6 singles, by a score of 6-0, 6-2 over Cape.

The Tigers will play at 30th-ranked Texas-Tyler next Friday at noon. UT-Tyler is ranked No. 5 in the West Region. Trinity concludes the weekend with a Saturday match, at 9 a.m., with SCAC member Rhodes.
