Women's Tennis Edges Redlands Sunday Afternoon
Redlands, Calif. – The Trinity Tigers
women’s tennis team, ranked 19th in Division III, upset the
No. 10 Redlands Bulldogs 5-4 Sunday afternoon.
Tiger junior Katy Poettcker, playing the last match on the courts,
clinched the dual match with a victory at No. 1 singles. Poettcker,
from Colleyville, Texas (Colleyville), beat Rachel Miller of
Redlands 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Trinity, No. 3 in the West Region, improved to 3-9 after the win over Redlands, the second-ranked team in the region. It marked the first time this season the Tigers claimed a win over a ranked team.
Redlands started the match by winning two of three doubles. Trinity sophomore Katie Griffith of Spokane, Wash. (Ferris); and first-year Thavindra Ekanayake of Sri Lanka; won No. 3 doubles, with an 8-1 victory over Nicole Gerentine and Sutton Anderson.
The Tigers were solid in singles, winning four of six matches.
Griffith took No. 2 singles, defeating Paige Sumida 6-3, 7-5. No. 5 singles went to junior Megan Jackson of Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch), who beat Julia Gulbraith 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Kassie Seger of Boise, Idaho (Bishop Kelly), won No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anderson.
The Tigers conclude their California trip Monday, with a match against 16th-ranked Bowdoin, at Claremont.
