Women's Soccer Downs Rhodes in SCAC Semifinal
Birmingham, Alabama - The defending champion
and top-seeded Trinity Tigers shut out the No. 4 Rhodes Lynx 5-0 in
the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Saturday.
Trinity (19-0-0), ranked No. 3 in the nation, advanced to Sunday's
championship game against the third-seeded and 22nd-ranked Centre
Colonels. Centre beat the second-seeded and host
Birmingham-Southern Panthers 2-1 in double-overtime Saturday.
The winner of Sunday's 11 a.m. game will receive an automatic bid
to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Five different Tiger players scored goals in the semifinal-game,
starting with Kelly Watts in the fourth minute. Stephanie Segovia
supplied the assist. Segovia leads the team with 23 goals and six
assists, and 52 total points.
Lauren Henderson gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead, in the 37th minute of
play, and was assisted by Kirby Peddicord.
Trinity scored three goals in the second half, led by Segovia in
the 75th minute, on an assist by Mariah Risk. The final two goals
were unassisted, and just seven minutes apart. Tara Sparks put one
past the Lynx keeper in the 81st minute, and Emily Jorgens scored
in the 88th minute.
The Tigers, who registered their 16th shutout of the season,
outshot their opponent 25-4, and led 16-1 in shots on the mark.
