Women's Soccer Blanks Texas Lutheran in Season Opener
Seguin, Texas – The fifth-ranked Trinity University Tigers women’s soccer team opened its 2010 campaign with a 3-0 win over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs Wednesday night at Gustafson Field.
Trinity’s opening goal of the season came in the 33rd minute from first-year midfielder Hannah Westberg. Junior forward Kelly Watts, who scored in the 34th minute of play, provided the assist to Westberg. First-year midfielder Tara Sparks assisted Watts, as the Tigers led 2-0 at halftime.
Another Tiger first-year player, forward Shelby Guenthardt, scored in the 56th minute. Her assist came from junior forward Abby Loar, the Tigers’ leading returning scorer.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Garrett was credited with the shutout, while making one save.
Trinity led TLU 31-2 in total shots, and 15-1 on goal.
The Tigers travel to Abilene, Texas, Saturday to take on 13th-ranked Hardin-Simmons. Trinity opens its home schedule Tuesday, Sept. 7, with Mary Hardin-Baylor.
