Three Women's Soccer Players Earn National Academic Honors
San Antonio - Three members of the Trinity University Tigers women's soccer team have been elected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Scholar All-America Team.
Senior midfielder Brianna Young and junior defender Danika Wright were selected for the Scholar All-America First Team. Junior midfielder Jordan Azar made the Third Team.
All were previously selected for the NSCAA All-South Region Academic First Team, and the All-West Region Team, based on athletic performance. The entire Tiger squad received the NSCAA Women's Team Academic Award.
Young, from Rockville Centre, N.Y. (South Side), is an English major with a 3.31 grade point average. She was selected for the NSCAA All-America First Team, and was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Young sparked the Tiger offense (56 goals scored), and was tied fore the lead in points with sophomore forward Abby Loar, with 37 points. Young scored 14 goals (six game-winners) and had nine assists.
Wright, from Alpine, Utah (Lone Peak), is a business administration/accounting major with a 3.83 grade point average. An NSCAA All-America First Team selection, Wright was also named SCAC Defensive Player of the Year. She anchored the Tiger defense, which allowed only five goals during the season, while registering 14 shutouts. Wright contributed to the offense by scoring five goals (one game-winner), along with three assists.
Azar, from Albuquerque, N.M. (St. Pius X), is an economics and finance major with a 3.65 grade point average, and registered eight assists this season.
Senior midfielder Alex Leamy of Loveland, Ohio (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy), was elected to the All-South Region Academic Honorable Mention Team. Leamy, an engineering science major with a 3.94 grade point average, was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Women's Soccer Team for the second straight year.
Led by sixth-year head coach Lance Key, the Tigers sported a perfect 16-0-0 regular-season record. Under coach Key's leadership, Trinity won a fourth SCAC Championship. Coach Key was elected SCAC Coach of the Year for the third time. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals (hosted by Trinity), where they were edged 4-2 in penalty kicks by Lynchburg. Trinity completed the season with an 18-0-1 record, and a No. 5 national ranking.
