Two Florida Soccer Players to Join Trinity Women's Team
San Antonio – Megan Buford and Shelby Guenthardt of Florida will become members of the Trinity University Tigers women’s soccer team in August.
Buford is a back from Sanford, (Seminole), and Guenthardt is a forward from Winter Springs (Winter Springs High School). The two players were teammates on FC America Kumba.
At Seminole, Buford was defensive MVP her junior and senior years, as well as earning all-conference honors. Buford was elected team co-captain her senior year. She will graduate from high school with honors.
Guenthardt was a first team all-conference recipient at Winter Springs, and was voted team captain. Winter Springs won the regional championship, the first time in history the team made the state semifinals. Guenthardt scored 53 goals in her high school career, and was voted the Fellowship of Christian Athlete's Central Florida Student Athlete of the Year. She was a straight-A student throughout her four years in high school.
“On the field, Shelby is a very dynamic attacker with a fantastic work rate,” Trinity women's soccer head coach Lance Key said. “ Her creativity comes through a variety of avenues, and we expect her to make a valuable contribution to a talented attack.
“Megan is a player who will bring a presence to our side. She's an athlete with a sound concept of the game. Megan will develop into a very good outside defender for us.”
Coach Key led the team to a perfect 16-0-0 regular-season record, and won a fourth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship this past fall. He was elected SCAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year for the third time.
After finishing 18-0-1 and advancing to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals last year, the Tigers will return three of its top four scorers in 2010. All-American and SCAC Defensive Player of the Year Danika Wright will lead the Tigers next fall, following a year in which the team was the top-ranked defensive team in Division III. Wright will be joined by seven other returning All-SCAC performers, including SCAC Newcomer of the Year Lindsay Euers.
“Megan and Shelby are exceptional young women who come with an integrity in everything they do,” coach Key concluded. “Both are fantastic students as well, and have tremendous drive and ambition. They will add great value to our community.”
