Trinity Women's Golf Preview 2010-11

Trinity women’s golf Coach Carla Spenkoch is known for taking a close interest in the development of each of her players.

But this year, Coach Spenkoch is especially thrilled about the three newcomers who have joined the Tigers golf ranks.

“I have three strong first-year players,” says Coach Spenkoch, in her 13th year at the Tigers’ helm. “They hit the ball well, and hit it long. They are all capable of shooting some good scores, and they are exciting to watch.”

Two of the first-year golfers are tied for the best scoring average (86.67) after three tournaments, and six rounds played in the fall.

Molly McCarthy (Fulshear, Texas/Fulshear) placed seventh last September at the Lady Bulldog Fall Classic in Seguin, Texas. McCarthy shot a second-round 77, the lowest score for the fall portion of the season. She tied for 18th place at the Trinity-hosted SCAC Fall Preview at  Horseshoe Bay, Texas.

Molly Zumbro (San Antonio/Reagan) finished eighth at the Lady Bulldog Classic, with a low score of 81, and 34th at the SCAC Fall Preview.

Elise Rosmarin (Wellesley, Mass./Heritage School) had a best finish of No. 22 at the UMHB Lady Cru Fall Invitational at Killeen, Texas. Rosmarin was 31st at the SCAC Fall Preview.

The Tigers had good team showings at the three tournaments, including a third-place finish (out of eight teams) at the Lady Bulldog Fall Classic. Trinity placed seventh of 10 teams at the UMHB Lady Cru Fall Invitational, and the SCAC Fall Preview.

Coach Spenkoch is also pleased by the fact that she has the most players in a number of years, with eight on the roster. Another plus is the fact that five veteran players have returned for the upcoming season, which begins Feb. 21 at the St. Mary’s Invitational at the storied Pecan Valley Course in San Antonio.

Two seniors are on the team, Emma Herzog (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) and Lisa Zampello (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood). Junior Julia Orrange (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) returns after studying abroad. Sophomores Courtney Bosquez (Bryan, Texas/Bryan) and Madison Wallender (Spring Branch, Texas/Smithson Valley) are also ready to contribute.

Last February, the Tiger women captured their first tournament out of the gate, the Sen. Eddie Lucio College Invitational at Laguna Vista, Texas. Trinity placed four golfers in the top-12 slots, including Wallender, who was runner-up. Orrange finished 10th, and Herzog was No. 11.

The 54-hole Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships were held at Stone Mountain, Ga., and Trinity came in fifth as a team. Orrange finished at No. 18, Wallender was 20th, and Herzog placed 27th.

Stats wise for the 2009-10 season, Wallender was the leader with an 84.25 average.

"I strongly believe we will have a good spring season,” Coach Spenkoch says. “I’m definitely excited about this team. We will be  working very hard on our short game to improve our scores. Also, Emma Herzog will be a strong leader of the Tiger team.”

Following the St. Mary’s tournament, the Tigers head to Kerrville, Texas, Feb. 28, and the Schreiner Women’s Spring Shootout. The Jekyll Island Women’s Collegiate Invitational is set for March 18 at Jekyll Island, Ga. The Southwestern Invitational starts April 4 in Georgetown, Texas.

Trinity will host the SCAC Championships, beginning April 22 at a familiar place – the Horseshoe Bay’s Apple Rock Course.
