San Antonio - The 22nd-ranked Trinity women's basketball team opens the 64-team NCAA Division III Tournament Friday in Richardson, Texas.
Trinity (23-3) will meet host University of Texas-Dallas in the first round Friday, March 2 at 8:00 p.m. East Texas Baptist University will play Whitman (WA) College in the other first-round matchup earlier in the day. The winners advance to Saturday's second round game scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
The NCAA Sectionals are set for March 9-10 with the sites to be determined. The Semifinals and Championship games will be played March 16-17 at Rochester, Minnesota.
Trinity earned its berth in the NCAA Tournament by winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship at Colorado Springs, Colorado, last weekend. The Tigers outfought Southwestern (TX) University 80-74 to win their third consecutive SCAC trophy. It marked the first "three-peat" by a team since DePauw (IN) University accomplished the feat from 2006-2008. Trinity also won its fourth SCAC title in six seasons.
The Tigers will compete in their third consecutive NCAA Tournament and fourth in six years under Head Coach Cameron Hill. Last year, Trinity opened the tournament at UT-Dallas and defeated Hendrix (AR) College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA) Colleges in the first two rounds. The Tigers headed to St. Paul, Minnesota, for the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Whitman. Coach Hill first guided his team to the NCAA Playoffs in the 2012-13 campaign.
This marks the 10th time the Tigers have advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Trinity captured the NCAA Championship in 2003 and qualified for the postseason event for the first time in 1995.
