San Antonio – Trinity's 22nd-ranked women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the regular season Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 70-49 win over Schreiner (TX) University.
Schreiner took the early advantage by scoring nine of the first 11 points in the game and led 11-4 with just over three minutes elapsed.
Trinity answered with 10 straight points to jump-start a 20-5 run to close out the quarter and take a 24-16 lead.
The Tigers then scored eight of the first nine points of the second quarter to grow the lead to 15 points after just 75 seconds. Schreiner was able to drop the lead back to single digits shortly after, but Trinity finished the second quarter with an 11-1 run that made it a 45-27 game at the half.
Trinity hit the first shot of the fourth quarter and Schreiner never got closer than 19 points the rest of the way.
The Tiger defense recorded 16 steals and forced 26 turnovers, holding Schreiner to just 30.2% (16-53) from the field and 16.7% (3-18) from three-point range.
The Tigers improved to 21-3 on the season with the team's sixth consecutive victory, which also pushed the team's conference record to 13-1. Schreiner fell to 6-19 overall and 4-10 in SCAC play.
Weaver led a trio of Trinity players in double figures, scoring 15 points to go with six rebounds and four assists.
Abby Holland came off the bench with 14 points on 7-14 shooting, grabbing five rebounds to go with three steals in just 21 minutes.
Julia Ackerman hit a pair of three-pointers on her way to a 10-point game, pulling down three rebounds and joining Weaver with a team-high four assists.
Hughes snagged five rebounds to go with eight points, while Irvin two points and two rebounds. Gordon led the team with six rebounds, as well as scoring four points and recording two steals.
Trinity will receive at bye at the SCAC Championships Tournament next weekend in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Times and opponents will be announced following the conclusion of the regular season for all teams.
