San Antonio – Trinity's 12th-ranked women's basketball team returned to action with a 75-62 victory over Louisiana College on Monday night.
Despite not playing a game in over three weeks, the Tigers were on fire to start the game, sprinting out to a 25-10 lead after the first quarter of action. Trinity's 13-0 run in the middle of the quarter turned a tie game into a double-digit lead.
After Trinity pushed the lead to 20 in the second quarter, the Wildcats whittled the lead down to single digits (33-24), but the Tigers immediately scored seven of the next eight points to regain control of the game.
The Tigers turned a 42-28 halftime lead into a 21-point advantage late in the third quarter, but a three-pointer in the final seconds of the third made it a 60-42 lead for the home team.
The lead was 20 points (69-49) as the clock wound under four minutes to play when Louisiana began to rally. The 13-2 run made it a nine-point game with 1:17 remaining, but Trinity knocked down four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Trinity's third consecutive win pushed its record to 4-1 this season, while Louisiana College suffered its second straight loss to fall to 6-4 on the year.
The Tigers were led by a pair of 20-point scorers in tonight's victory. Abby Holland led all scorers with 21 points, sinking 6-11 field goals and 8-9 free throws. Holland also recorded three steals to go with three assists and five rebounds.
Micah Weaver scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half of play, hitting 6-9 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range over the first two quarters. Weaver also finished with 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, as well as adding three steals, three assists, and two blocked shots.
The Tigers will host the Trinity Christmas Classic on Wednesday and Thursday, welcoming the University of Puget Sound (WA), Whitman (WA) College, and Schreiner (TX) University. Trinity faces Puget Sound at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, to open its part in the tournament.
