San Antonio - The 12th-ranked Tiger women's basketball team opened its home schedule and the Trinity Thanksgiving Classic with a 73-48 victory over Hardin-Simmons (TX) University Saturday night.
After Hardin-Simmons took an early 5-2 lead in the first quarter of action, Trinity answered with seven straight points, and never trailed again the rest of the game.
The Tigers missed three of their final four shots to close out the first quarter, but still led 17-12 at the break after holding Hardin-Simmons to just 35% (7-20) shooting to start the game.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second quarter, but Trinity turned a narrow 23-17 lead into a 15-point advantage with nine straight points. Hardin-Simmons outscored Trinity 9-2 over the final 4:52, though, and the lead was just 36-28 by halftime.
The third quarter started with the Tigers racing out to a 12-2 run that made it an 18-point lead. The closest the Cowgirls would get the rest of the way was within 11 points (50-39) late in the third, but Trinity scored eight points over the final 2:10 to make it a 58-39 lead after three.
Neither team scored much in the fourth, but Trinity limited Hardin-Simmons to just nine points in the final 10 minutes, and the Tigers led by 20 or more most of the quarter.
Trinity improved to 2-1 on the season, while Hardin-Simmons had it first loss of the campaign and dropped to 2-1.
The 73 points scored by the Tigers were a season-high, and the 48 points allowed also marked a season-best for Trinity's defense.
In addition to shooting 6-10 from the field and 5-5 at the foul line, Holland also had a team-high six rebounds. Holland also tied her career-best total with six steals.
Jordan Rudd came off the bench and added nine points in the win.
Rachel Chavez contributed eight points and led the game with four assists.
The Cowgirls committed 29 turnovers, leading to Trinity's decisive 38-8 edge in points off turnovers.
The Tigers conclude the Trinity Thanksgiving Classic with a game against the University of Texas-Tyler at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
