Hardin-Simmons Beats Trinity Women
San Antonio - The Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls erased a seven-point halftime deficit to beat the Trinity Tigers women 76-72, at the Trinity Christmas Classic on Wednesday afternoon.
Trinity had won two straight games, but now falls to 3-6 on the season. Hardin-Simmons improved to 8-1.
The Tigers led 42-35 at halftime, scoring the last seven points of the half. Trinity shot nearly 54 percent from the field, and Hardin-Simmons hit 50 percent. Tiger sophomore guard Anne Waidelich (Floyd, Texas/Bland) scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.
Hardin-Simmons outscored Trinity 15-4 as the second half began, to take a 50-46 lead with 14:16 remaining. The Cowgirls went on to take a 14-point lead, 70-56, with six minutes on the clock. The Tigers started a 16-point rally, though, and pulled to within four points (72-76) on a 3-pointer by senior guard Danielle Hubenak at 1:23. Three missed shots by Trinity, coupled with Cowgirl rebounds, clinched the victory for Hardin-Simmons. The Cowgirls shot 47 percent in the half, to Trinity's 29 percent.
Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill) led the Tigers with 17 points, with 13 in the second half. She shot 6-11 from the field, made three assists, stole the ball twice, and grabbed four rebounds. Hubenak also moved into the top 10 in career scoring at Trinity, currently standing ninth with 1,056 points in her career. With 35 more points, she will move into eighth in school history.
Sophomore post Jana Tucker (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) recorded a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Waidelich finished the game with 14 points, on 6-10 shooting. Junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
Hardin-Simmons was paced by Lindsey Newcombe's double-double of 24 points and 16 rebounds. Jasmine Lewis added 20 points for the Cowgirls.
Trinity shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field, and Hardin-Simmons made 48.4 percent (30-62) of its shots. The Cowgirls led 45-34 in rebounding.
The Tigers resume their SCAC campaign Friday against Colorado College in Colorado Springs; and travel to Sherman, Texas, Sunday to take on Austin College. Trinity (0-1 SCAC) returns home to host Millsaps in a conference tilt Friday, Jan. 7.
