Trinity Women's Basketball Rolls Over Sewanee
Sewanee, Tenn. - The Trinity University Tigers women dominated Sewanee: The University of the South Tigers in an 82-55 SCAC victory Friday night in Juhan Gym.
Trinity, which won its second straight game, improved to 5-9 and 2-4 SCAC. Sewanee dropped to 2-11 and 0-6.
The Texas Tigers set the tone in the first half, as they outscored their opponents 23-6 in the final 8 1/2 minutes of the opening period. Trinity, which shot over 51 percent in the half, led 42-23 at the intermission. The Tigers did not allow a Sewanee point from the 8:26 mark until 1:34 remained in the half.
Trinity, which registered a season-high in points, led by as much as 36 points (73-37) with 8:43 left in the game.
First-year guard Nicolette Halbleib (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) scored all 11 of her points in the first half. Halbleib shot 5-10 for the game. Murphy Burns (Oklahoma City/Heritage Hall), also a first-year guard, scored nine of her 11 points in the second half. Burns hit 4-7 from the field, and grabbed five rebounds.
Junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) contributed 10 points, on 5-7 shooting, along with four rebounds, and three steals. Senior guard Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill) accounted for eight assists, two steals, and seven points.
First-year forward Kelsey Daniel (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) and sophomore post Jana Tucker (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) tied for the game lead in rebounds with seven each. Daniel scored six points and made two steals, while Tucker put in two points.
Rebounding was a key stat in the contest, as Trinity led 52-25 in total rebounds, and 13-5 in offensive boards.
Logan Miller led Sewanee with 13 points, and Dani Kabbes scored 12.
Trinity tore up the shooting stats at 56.3 percent (36-64), and Sewanee hit 33.9 percent (19-56).
The Tigers continue their SCAC road trip Saturday by taking on Oglethorpe at 6 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Central) in Atlanta.
