Trinity Closes Regular Season With Narrow Win Over Dallas

San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers women closed out their regular season with a 61-59 non-conference win over the University of Dallas Crusaders Saturday night in Sams Gym.

Trinity (13-12), which won its fourth straight game, will now compete in the eight-team SCAC Championship Tournament next Friday through Sunday at Jackson, Miss. The Tigers stand at 9-7 in SCAC play, and are in second place in the West. Tournament pairings will be announced by the conference office.

Dallas, which lost 62-71 to Trinity last Dec. 7 in Irving, Texas, dropped to 12-12.

Tiger senior guard Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill), playing her final regular-season home game, scored 22 points in the winning effort. Hubenak moved up to No. 5 on Trinity's all-time scoring list, with 1,330 career points. She passed Megan Selmon (1999-2003), who scored 1,329 points. Hubenak shot 7-17 from the field, 3-8 beyond the arc, sank 5-6 free throws, and dished out three assists.

Hubenak already is Trinity's leader in career assists, and upped her total to 427.

Junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) added 16 points and a team-best nine rebounds. In her three-year career, Dietert has scored 1,063 points, and is now Trinity's ninth-leading scorer. Dietert shot 6-15 from the floor, 1-4 in 3-point range, 3-3 at the charity stripe, and recorded three steals.

First-year guard Murphy Burns (Oklahoma City/Heritage Hall) rounded out Trinity's double-figure scorers with 12 points.

Kylie Yoshimura led the Crusaders with 17 points, and Christy Allen had 16. Kelly Regan registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tigers led 30-24 at halftime, paced by Hubenak's 14 points. Trinity took an 11-point second-half lead (37-26), on a layup by Dietert with less than 15 minutes to play. But the Crusaders completely turned the game around and led 54-44 at the 4:46 mark.

Burns tied the contest (54-54) with a second free throw shot at 3:09. Hubenak gave Trinity a five-point lead (59-54)  by two free throws with 24 seconds on the clock. Yoshimura responded with a 3-pointer, as Dallas closed to 57-59.

Tiger first-year guard Nicolette Halbleib (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) (five points, two assists, two steals) made one of two free throws , followed by a layup by the Crusaders Allen. Hubenak gave the Tigers a 61-59 lead by making one of two free throws. A 3-point attempt by Yoshimura fell short as the game ended.

Trinity shot 33.3 percent (19-57) from the field, and Dallas hit 47.1 percent (24-51). The Tigers led 37-34 in total rebounds, and 18-10 in offensive boards. Dallas committed 36 turnovers, and Trinity made 28.
