Tiger Women Lose Second Straight Game to Millsaps on Friday
Jackson, Miss. - The Millsaps Majors beat the Trinity Tigers women's basketball team 79-69 in a SCAC game at The Hangar Dome on Friday night.
Trinity previously had a two-game winning streak snapped, and now stands at 9-11 and 6-6 in the SCAC. Millsaps (10-10, 7-5) was a 66-59 winner over the Tigers last Jan. 7 in San Antonio. It marked the first time since the 1995-96 season the Majors swept the Tigers during the regular season.
Tiger junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) paced the team with 19 points. Dietert shot 7-16 from the field, sank 5-5 free throws, and pulled in five rebounds.
Senior guard Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill) added 16 points, on 5-9 shooting from the field, and 4-5 in three-point range. Hubenak also led the Tigers in rebounds, with eight, and dished out three assists.
First-year guard Murphy Burns (Oklahoma City/Heritage Hall) scored 11 points, and had six rebounds. Sophomore guard Anne Waidelich (Floyd, Texas/Bland) contributed nine points and six rebounds. Libby Kruse (Minnetrista, N.M./Orona) led the game with four steals, while scoring five points and picking up six rebounds.
Millsaps held a 35-31 lead at halftime. The Tigers went on to take a 47-41 lead with 16:40 remaining in the second half. The game was tied for the fifth time (55-55) at 8:27, though, and the Majors followed that with a 16-6 run and led by 10 (71-61), at 1:42. The Tigers did close to six points (67-73) on a three-pointer by Hubenak with 1:05 to play, but it wasn't enough to come away with the win.
Majors guard Kristin Salmon scored a game-best 25 points, and forward Janice Okeke registered a double-double with 18 points and 19 rebounds.
Trinity shot 36.1 percent (26-72) from the field, and Millsaps hit 40.4 percent (21-52). At the free throw line, the Tigers went 10-12 (83.3 percent), and the Majors sank 32-38 (84.2 percent) of their shots. Trinity led 43-39 in total rebounds.
The Tigers continue their SCAC road trip Saturday in Conway, Ark., in a 6 p.m. game against Hendrix.
