Women's Basketball Opens Weekend With Win at Rhodes

Memphis, Tenn. - The Trinity women's basketball team opened its SCAC road trip with a 77-66 victory over the Rhodes Lynx at Mallory Gymnasium on Friday night.

Trinity has won five of its last six games, improving to 8-10 and 5-5 SCAC.  Rhodes dropped to 5-13 and 2-8.

The Tigers were paced by junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) with 21 points. Dietert shot 7-15 from the field, sank 7-7 free throws, and pulled in eight rebounds.

Sophomore guard Anne Waidelich (Floyd, Texas/Bland) added 12 points, hitting 5-9 from the field, and 2-3 in 3-point range. First-year guard Nicolette Halbleib (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) scored 11 points, and accounted for two steals.

Libby Kruse (Minnestrista, N.M./Orona) registered a double-double, with 10 points and a game-leading 12 rebounds, along with two steals. Senior guard Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill) also scored 10 points, dished out four assists, and made two steals. Hubenak, Trinity's all-time assists leader, increased her season total to 68, and her career mark to 402.

Sophomore post Jana Tucker (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) was effective on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds, while making two steals, and scoring seven points.

The game was tightly played in the first half, as the score was tied at 37-37 at intermission. But in the second half, the Tigers outscored the Lynx 40-29. Trinity shot 42 percent from the field, and Rhodes hit 40 percent in the second half. Trinity made 4-8 from 3-point range in the half, while Rhodes managed only 1-8. 

Sharwil Bell of Rhodes led the game with 25 points, and had a double-double, with 11 rebounds. Amy Handelman also posted a double-double, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Trinity shot 40.5 percent (30-74) from the field, and 31.8 percent (7-22) beyond the arc. Rhodes hit 44.2 percent (23-52) of its shots, and was limited to 14.3 percent (2-14) in 3-point shooting.

The Tigers led 39-36 in rebounding, and forced 19 Rhodes turnovers. Trinity committed 14 turnovers in the game.

Next up for Trinity is an SCAC match-up with Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
