Austin College Outlasts Trinity in Double-Overtime SCAC Game
Sherman, Texas - The Austin College Kangaroos outscored the Trinity women 15-4 in the second overtime period to beat the Tigers 87-76 Sunday afternoon in an SCAC game at Hughey Gym.
Trinity, which lost its third straight game, now stands at 3-8 and 0-3 SCAC. Austin College improved to 4-6 and 2-2 SCAC. The two teams will tangle again Feb. 13 in Sams Gym.
Tiger senior guard Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio/Churchill) scored a career-high 31 points, and tied her school record with seven 3-pointers. Hubenak, who sent the game into the first overtime with two free throws (61-61 after regulation play), shot 9-17 from the field, 7-10 beyond the arc, and registered five steals, five assists, and seven rebounds.
Junior forward Abby Dietert (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) tied the score at 72-72 by a layup with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Hubenak grabbed a rebound from a missed Austin College jump shot with six seconds on the clock. Dietert pulled in nine rebounds, blocked two shots, and made two steals.
Hubenak tied the score at 74-74 (3:54) in the second OT period with a jumper. But the Tigers managed only two more points, a jump shot by Hubenak at 2:16 (76-81). The Kangaroos then went on a 6-0 scoring run to close out the game.
Trinity first-year guard Murphy Burns (Oklahoma City/Heritage Hall) produced 14 points and two steals.
The Tigers shot 29.2 percent (25-85) from the field, and the Kangaroos hit 43.8 percent (28-64). Austin College led 55-49 in total rebounds, but Trinity held a 22-14 advantage in offensive boards.
Austin College led 23-22 at halftime and was paced by Kersti Marusich with 27 points in the game. Erin Riley had a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Spenser Cruikshank led the game with 12 rebounds (eight points).
Trinity returns home to host two SCAC games Friday and Saturday with Millsaps and Hendrix, respectively. Tip off is at 6 p.m. each day.
