Trinity Women Close Out Regular Season Home Schedule with Win Over Millsaps
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers women closed out their regular-season home schedule with a 77-45 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory Sunday over the Millsaps Majors in Sams Gym.
Trinity, which has won three of the last four games, improved to 15-6 and 9-4 SCAC, and are currently in third place in the conference West Division. The Tigers beat the Majors 62-58 on Jan. 9 in Jackson, Miss. Trinity has three more SCAC games, all on the road. The top four teams in each of the West and East Divisions advance to the SCAC Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Millsaps. The Majors remained winless at 0-22 and 0-13 SCAC.
Tiger sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), led the game with 24 points. Marzella shot 8-18 from the field, was 6-16 in 3-pointers, and sank both free throw attempts. She also registered a team-best seven assists.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell of Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), scored 12 points, on 5-9 shooting, and accounted for eight rebounds. Junior post Lindsey Hovland of Colleyville, Texas (Heritage), pulled in a game-leading 10 rebounds, while scoring four points.
Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill) added nine points and four assists. Hubenak earlier became Trinity's all-time assists leader, and has recorded over 300 in her career
Senior post Alexandra Blake of Belleville. Ill. (John Burroughs), in her final regular-season home contest, reached the 400-rebounds plateau with four in the game. Blake also scored four points.
The Tigers led 39-25 at halftime. Millsaps could get no closer than 16 points (25-41, 19:52 left in the game) after that mark. Trinity outscored Millsaps 38-20 in the second half of play.
Shante' Morton led Millsaps with 11 points, the only Majors player to score in double figures.
Trinity shot 41 percent from the field, and Millsaps hit 40 percent. The Tigers held a sizeable 45-32 lead in rebounding, including a 21-8 advantage in offensive boards. Trinity had 16 turnovers, and forced 29 on Millsaps.
The Tigers continue their SCAC campaign Friday in Sherman, Texas, against Austin College (second place) in the division, and travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., Saturday for a game with Colorado College.
