Trinity Women's Basketball Edges Colorado College with Last-Second Shot

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Trinity sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell made a last-second layup as the Tiger women beat the Colorado College Tigers 68-67 Saturday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic game at Reid Gymansium.

Goodell, from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), took the pass from junior guard Danielle Hubenak, as the Tigers improved to 16-7 and 10-5 SCAC. Trinity, which beat Colorado College 92-82 on Jan. 3 in San Antonio, is in third place in the SCAC West Division. The Texas Tigers previously qualified for the SCAC Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Colorado College dropped to 12-11 and 6-8 SCAC.

The game was definitely a see-saw affair. Trinity led by as much as eight points in the first half (16:14), and Colorado College held a three-point lead (5:21). The halftime score was tied at 37-37. In the second half, the game was tied at 53-53, when Trinity went up 56-53 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Ali Marzella. at 7:58. Trinity went up by six, 61-55, on a jumper by sophomore forward Abby Dietert with 4:58 left in the game. Colorado College whittled the lead and led 64-63, at 1:59. Goodell was fouled, and made one of two free throws, as the score read 64-64.

Colorado College went up 65-64 (53 seconds) on one free throw. Dietert grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup with 21 seconds on the clock, as Trinity led by one point. Colorado College's Collier Clegg sank a jumper with 10 seconds remaining, before the Hubenak to Goodell winning combination occurred.

Goodell finished the game with 12 points, on 5-9 shooting, along with picking up seven rebounds.

Marzella, from Katy, Texas (Taylor), scored six points, and made two 3-pointers. In Friday's 58-54 loss to Austin College in Sherman, Texas, Marzella became on the second Trinity player to score 100 career 3-pointers. She is now four 3-point baskets away from breaking the Trinity career record.

Trinity was led in scoring by first-year guard Anne Waidelich from Floyd, Texas (Floyd), who scored 18 points. Waidelich shot 7-14 from the field, 2-3 in 3-point range, and made both free throws. Dietert scored 12 points, on 6-10 shooting, while pulling in seven rebounds. Hubenak, from San Antonio (Churchill), added 11 points and seven assists. Previously, Hubenak became Trinity's all-time assists leader, and now has 324 total. She is now the second player in Tiger history to record 100 or more assists in one season.

Colorado College was paced by Clegg, who scored a game-high 19 points.

Trinity shot 42 percent from the field, and Colorado College hit 39 percent. Colorado College held a 43-40 edge in rebounding.

The Trinity Tigers conclude their SCAC regular-season campaign next Friday in Georgetown, Texas, with Southwestern. Their final regular-season game will be next Saturday at the University of Dallas.
