Tiger Women Defeat McMurry in Overtime Thriller
San Antonio - Trinity's women's basketball team closed out the two-day Trinity Tip-Off Tournament with a 91-90 overtime victory over McMurry University on Saturday night.
Trinity, which improved to 2-0, had beaten No. 24 Hardin-Simmons 79-69 Friday night.
The score was tied at 77-77 at the end of regulation. Trinity, which led 40-37 at halftime, took an 82-79 lead in the overtime period, with 3:17 on the clock. But the lead see-sawed back and forth and the game was tied, for the 18th time, at 86-86, with 1:54 remaining.
Tiger junior guard Danielle Hubenak gave Trinity a two-point lead with a jumper. With the clock running down to 38 seconds, sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell increased the lead to 90-86 by sinking two free throws. McMurry hit two from the charity stripe, and closed to 88-90 with 30 seconds remaining. Hubenak made one of two free throws, with 12 seconds left, and Trinity led 91-88. McMurry scored with two seconds remaining, as time then expired.
Goodell, from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), led the Tigers with 24 points, shooting 7-14 from the field and going 2-2 in 3-pointers. She registered a double-double, by pulling in 13 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Abby Dietert from Cibolo, Texas (Steele), produced 19 points and seven assists. Dietert shot 8-15 and grabbed nine rebounds. Hubenak, from San Antonio (Churchill), had 18 points, going 5-8 from the field and 2-3 beyond the arc. She also dished out seven assists.
McMurry's LaPorsha Alexander led the game with 33 points, along with 13 rebounds. Amanda Peters and Erica Rayls each added 12 points.
Trinity shot 49 percent from the field (52 percent in the second half), to McMurry's 43 percent. A major difference was in 3-point shooting, as the Tigers hit 46 percent, to 23 percent for McMurry. Trinity also led 50-44 in rebounds.
The Tigers will host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24.
