Centre Eliminates Trinity From SCAC Tournament Friday Night

Jackson, Mississippi - The Centre College Colonels beat the Trinity University Tigers women's basketball team 80-65 Friday night in the opening round of  the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at Belhaven University.

Trinity, seeded No. 3 in the SCAC West Division, completed its season with a record of 17-9. Centre, No. 2 in the East, improved to 18-7 and faces Hendrix, No. 1 in the West, in Saturday's semifinals. The Tigers, who advanced to the 2009 SCAC final, beat the Colonels 70-60 on Jan. 22 in Danville, Kentucky.

Tiger sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell of Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), registered her sixth double-double of the season, with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Goodell shot 5-9 from the field, and sank 12-15 free throws.  Her 23 points are the fifth-most in Trinity history for a single SCAC Tournament game, and the 12 made free throws are the second-highest single-game total in tournament play.

Goodell also recorded a game-high six blocks in the game - including three blocks on one possession in the second half.  Those six blocks are a new Tiger SCAC Tournament record.

Ali Marzella, a sophomore guard from Katy, Texas (Taylor), had nine points and seven rebounds. Marzella, who made a 3-point bucket, earlier became Trinity's all-time shooter beyond the arc. She now has 107 3-point baskets during her short Tiger career.

Sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), led the game with 11 rebounds, while scoring five points.

First-year guard Anne Waidelich of Floyd, Texas (Floyd), added nine points, on 4-6 shooting from the field. Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill), scored seven points, and produced a game-best five assists, along with picking up three steals. Hubenak, Trinity's all-time assists leader, is now credited with 334 career assists. Junior guard Claire Gerall of Houston (Kinkaid) accounted for eight points in the game.

Maggie Prewitt of Centre led the game with 24 points, and Chelsea Goodman added 19.

Tiger junior forward Megan D'Errico of Issaquah, Wash. (Skyline), tied the game at 34-34 at halftime, with a jump shot. Centre, though, took a nine-point lead,  48-39, with 12:54 remaining in the second half. Trinity closed to four points, 52-56, with 5:47 on the clock, as Goodell sank two free throws. The Colonels then outscored the Tigers 24-13 in the final 5 ½ minutes of the contest.

Trinity shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field, and Centre hit nearly 41 percent (26-64). The Colonels sank 79 percent (22-28) free throws, and the Tigers made 73 percent (16-22). Trinity led 41-38 in rebounding, but also committed 24 turnovers, to 13 for Centre.
