Trinity Wraps SCAC Schedule With Road Win Over Southwestern
Georgetown, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers women's basketball team wrapped up its SCAC regular-season schedule with a 68-57 victory Friday night over the Southwestern Pirates.
Trinity (17-7, 11-5 SCAC) is in third place in the SCAC West Division. The Tigers earlier qualified for the eight-team SCAC Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Trinity concludes its regular season Saturday with a non-conference game at 4 p.m. in Irving, Texas, against the University of Dallas. Southwestern dropped to 10-15 and 6-10 SCAC.
Tiger junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill) led the squad with 20 points, shooting 6-13 from the field, 2-5 in 3-point range, and 6-6 at the free throw line. Hubenak, Trinity's all-time assists leader, upped her career total to 326, with two assists Friday.
Sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), added 15 points and nine rebounds. Marzella hit 3-5 from beyond the arc, and needs just one more 3-pointer to break the Trinity career record. She also had four assists and three steals.
Kelsey Goodell, a sophomore forward from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), recorded a double-double, with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Shae Seagraves of Southwestern led the game with 23 points.
The Tigers, who beat Southwestern 68-53 last Dec. 3 in San Antonio, were down 30-32 at halftime. Southwestern upped the lead to five in the second half, but Trinity tied the score at the 13:45 mark. The game was tied nine times, including a 49-49 deadlock with 8:10 remaining. A pair of free throws by Goodell, who went 8-8 at the line, put Trinity up for good, as the Tigers outscored the Pirates 19-8 the rest of the game.
Trinity shot 40 percent from the field, and 40 percent from 3-point range. Southwestern was limited to 34 percent and 27 percent, respectively. The Tigers held a 40-36 edge in rebounding.
