Trinity Women Edged by Hendrix Friday Night

San Antonio - The Hendrix Warriors edged the Trinity women 71-70 in a battle of top teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference West Division Friday night in Sams Gym.

Trinity led by six points, 70-64, with 2:15 left in the game, but the Tigers could not score after that mark. Jordan Henderson of Hendrix made two free throws to cut the lead to four points (66-70) at 2:04. A 3-pointer by Christina Byler brought the Warriors to within one with 1:22 on the clock.  With 26 seconds remaining, Byler was fouled, sinking both free throws to put Hendrix ahead 71-70.  Trinity missed the game's final shot, as Hendrix won for the sixth straight time, and swept the season series from the Tigers.

The Tigers, who had a two-game winning streak snapped, now stand at 14-6 and 8-4 SCAC, in third place in the conference West Division. Hendrix is the division leader, with a 10-2 SCAC record, and a 15-3 overall mark. The Warriors beat the Tigers 57-51 on Jan. 8 at Conway, Ark.

Trinity sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell of Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), registered a double-double, with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Goodell shot 9-19 from the field and 4-4 at the charity stripe. She also had two blocks and two assists.

Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill), who recently became Trinity's career assists leader, led the game with nine assists. Last week, Hubenak broke Trinity's all-time record and became the first Tiger women's player to surpass the 300 assists plateau. She was honored at halftime of the Tiger men's game by her coaches and teammates. Hubenak, who scored 15 points, also had four rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), added 10 points, three steals, five assists, and four rebounds. Aly Marzella, a sophomore guard from Katy, Texas (Taylor), also had three steals, along with seven points and three rebounds.

Senior post Alexandra Blake of Belleville, Ill. (John Burroughs), had six points and two steals, and is one rebound away from reaching 400 in her career.

Byler paced Hendrix with 13 points and eight rebounds. Henderson and Anna Roane each added 10 points.

Down 32-36 at halftime, the Tigers tied the score at 55-55, with 10:41 remaining in the second half. Trinity took a six-point lead, 68-62, on a 3-pointer by Hubenak at 4:52. The Warriors outscored the Tigers 9-2 in the final five minutes of play.

The Tigers shot 46 percent from the field, to 42 percent by Hendrix. Trinity hit 47 percent in 3-point range, and Hendrix shot 42 percent. The Warriors led 40-30 in rebounding.
