Trinity Women Edge Rhodes in Overtime

San Antonio - The Trinity University Tigers women edged the Rhodes College Lynx 92-86 Saturday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game in Sams Gym.

Trinity, which won its second straight game, and sixth of the last seven, improved to 14-5 and 8-3 SCAC. The Tigers are in third place in the SCAC Western Division. Rhodes dropped to 11-9 and 4-7 SCAC.

The Tigers, who won their second overtime game of the year, were down by six points, 80-86, with 3:26 left in the OT period. Trinity junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill) cut the lead to 83-86, with a 3-pointer at 3:12. Hubenak, who scored the Tigers' final 12 points,  hit another shot from beyond the arc, and tied the game at 86-86, with 2:49 on the clock. She was fouled and made one of two free throws, as the Tigers led 87-86 at 2:26. Junior guard Claire Gerall pulled in a rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Rhodes Becky Atnip. Hubenak was again fouled, and sank both free throws, (89-86, 1:09). The Lynx Sharwil Bell missed a 3-pointer and Hubenak grabbed the rebound. Hubenak then hit another trey with 10 seconds left, putting the game out of reach.

Trinity led 41-29 at halftime, shooting 68 percent in the first half, to 36 percent for Rhodes. The Lynx, though, shot 50 percent in the second half, to the Tigers' 44 percent, and outscored Trinity 49-37. Trinity was down 76-78 with 26 seconds remaining in regulation, when sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), picked up an offensive rebound and made a layup with seven seconds on the clock. Bell missed a 3-point attempt, as Hubenak made the rebound at the buzzer.

Hubenak, who became Trinity's all-time women's assists leader in the Tigers' Friday night win over Birmingham-Southern, recorded four assists against Rhodes. She became the first Tiger women's player to reach the 300-assists plateau. Hubenak scored a team-best 20 points, hitting 6-8 from the field, and going 5-5 in 3-point range. She also added six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), scored 19 points, on 7-12 shooting. Marzella led the game with eight assists and three steals, and produced seven rebounds. Kelsey Goodell, a sophomore forward from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), produced a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Goodell shot 6-12 from the field. Dietert added 14 points (6-10 shooting), and had five assists, five rebounds, a game-leading three blocks, and two steals.

Atnip and Bell led the game with 22 points each for the Lynx.

Trinity shot 57 percent in the game, and Rhodes hit 42 percent. The Tigers were effective in 3-pointers, shooting 53 percent, to 26 percent for the Lynx. Trinity held a 36-34 edge in rebounding.

The Tigers conclude their regular-season home schedule with two SCAC games. Trinity hosts Hendrix at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and Millsaps at noon Sunday, Feb. 7.
