Hubenak Breaks School Record as Tigers Defeat Birmingham-Southern

San Antonio - Trinity junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill) became the Tigers all-time assists leader in a 65-55 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Birmingham-Southern Panthers Friday night in Sams Gym.

Hubenak, who registered six assists and 10 points in the game, now has 297 career assists. She surpassed Christal Seahorn, who chalked up 295 assists from 1995-1999. Hubenak also pulled in four rebounds and two steals in the contest.

The Tigers, who have won five of the last six games, improved to 13-5 and 7-3 SCAC. Birmingham-Southern dropped to 8-10 and 3-7 SCAC.

Trinity sophomore guard Ali Marzella and sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell led the game with 14 points each. Marzella, from Katy, Texas (Taylor), also had four rebounds and one steal. Goodell, from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), picked up seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), added 10 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots, and one assist.

Junior post Lindsey Hovland of Colleyville, Texas (Heritage), led the game with 11 rebounds, while contributing six points and two assists.

Trinity led 28-23 at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Panthers 7-0 and led 35-23 with 17:59  left in the game. Birmingham-Southern pulled to within four points, 54-58 (3:12), but two free throws by Dietert started a 7-1 run in the final three minutes of play.

The Tigers shot 33 percent for the game, to 30 percent for Birmingham-Southern. Trinity held a 40-36 advantage in rebounding.

Katelyn Wilson paced the Panthers with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Trinity will host Rhodes in a SCAC game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
