Trinity Women Score Season-High in Win Over Sewanee
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers women scored a season-high with a 95-71 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Sewanee: The University of the South Tigers Sunday in Sams Gym.
Trinity, which won its third straight game, and fourth of the past five, improved to 11-4 and 5-2 SCAC. Sewanee dropped to 4-10 and 1-6 SCAC.
Trinity Tiger sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), registered a team season-best 27 points in the win. Marzella, two points shy of her all-time high, shot 9-15 from the field, 6-12 beyond the arc, and sank 3-4 free throws. She also had four steals, three assists, and three rebounds.
Sophomore forward Abby Dietert of Cibolo, Texas (Steele), added 18 points, hitting 5-6 from the field, and 8-9 from the charity stripe. Dietert accounted for six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill), who scored five points, tied for the lead in rebounds, with eight. Hubenak also dished out a game-leading four assists. Junior post Lindsey Hovland of Colleyville, Texas, added eight rebounds and four blocks, to go with six points.
Trinity led 56-32 at halftime, paced by Marzella's 21 first-half points, and 12 by Dietert. The Trinity Tigers shot 58 percent in the opening half, and limited Sewanee to 26 percent. Trinity led by as much as 37 points, 84-47 (3-pointer by Marzella at 8:40). Sewanee could get no closer than 22 points (41-63, 16:44).
Sewanee was paced by Jamie Robinson's 15 points, and 14 by Lauren Gully. Kelly Morrison pulled in eight rebounds, with nine points.
Trinity shot 53 percent for the game, and limited Sewanee to 28 percent. The Trinity Tigers hit 39 percent of 3-pointers, to 11 percent by Sewanee.
The hometown Tigers led 54-46 in rebounding, with a 43-21 advantage in defensive boards.
Trinity will play two SCAC road games next weekend, starting Friday at Centre in Danville, Ky. DePauw will be the Tigers' opponent next Saturday in Greencastle, Ind. The Tigers return home Friday, Jan. 29, to host Birmingham-Southern in a SCAC game. Trinity takes on Rhodes in a conference match-up Saturday, Jan. 30. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 31.
