Tigers Goodell Gets Career High as Trinity Women Beat Oglethorpe
San Antonio --- Trinity University sophomore forward Kelsey Goodell scored a career-high 25 points as the Tigers beat the defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 92-63 Friday in Sams Gym.
Trinity (10-4, 4-2 SCAC) won its second straight game and third of the last four. The Tigers tied a season-high in points, matching a 92-82 SCAC win over Colorado College Jan. 3 at Trinity. Oglethorpe, which beat Trinity in last year's SCAC Tournament final, dropped to 7-8 and 2-4 in conference play.
Goodell, from Portland, Ore. (Lincoln), shot 9-12 from the field, 1-2 in 3-point range, and sank 6-8 free throws. She also had six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Junior guard Danielle Hubenak of San Antonio (Churchill), added 17 points, hitting 6-12 from the field, and sinking all four free throw attempts. Hubenak led the team with three steals, grabbed four rebounds, and tied for the lead with four assists. Sophomore guard Ali Marzella of Katy, Texas (Taylor), scored 10 points, and also dished out four assists.
Junior forward Landes Randall of Spring, Texas (Klein); and first-year forward Amanda Patterson of Arlington, Texas (Nolan Catholic); each registered nine rebounds. Junior post Lindsey Hovland of Colleyville, Texas (Heritage), accounted for eight rebounds and eight points.
The Tigers led 49-37 at halftime, and held a 19-point advantage (32-13, 8:03) in the first half. Trinity went on a scoring tear in the second half, and led by as much as 32 points (81-49, 7:31).
Oglethorpe's Riley Cerone scored 16 points, on 6-12 shooting. Kaci Palmore led the game with 11 rebounds.
Trinity shot 44 percent from the field, to 32 percent for Oglethorpe. The Tigers held a sizeable 55-39 lead in rebounding. Trinity sank 80 percent (24-30) of free throws, to 63 percent (12-19) for Oglethorpe.
The Tigers will host Sewanee: The University of the South at noon Sunday, in a SCAC game.
