Masse Finishes Sixth in 5K and Earns All-America Honors

Greencastle, Ind. – Trinity University Tigers junior Caitlin Masse once again earned women’s All-America honors by finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Masse, from Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch), ran the event in a school-record 17:06.79 at the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center.

Last fall, Masse finished eighth at the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships at Highland Hills, Ohio. Masse, who became a cross country All-American, ran the course in 22:21.7. Her finish was the best-ever by a Tiger cross country runner, male or female, in NCAA competition.

Masse’s performance Saturday was the culmination of a highly successful weekend for the Tigers.

Senior Todd Wildman of Dallas (Jesuit) won the NCAA men’s pentathlon national championship for the second consecutive year. Wildman amassed 3,751 points, winning two of the five events, the 55-meter hurdles (7.58 seconds) and the high jump (6 feet, 7 ½ inches; 2.02 meters).

Trinity’s men’s distance medley relay team finished second with a time of 10:02.45. Team members Chass Armstrong, a senior from Boerne, Texas (Boerne); Brennen Peters, a senior from Austin, Texas (Austin); Zach Brush, a junior from Edmond, Okla. (Edmond North); and Bryant Wright, a senior from Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall); were just .07 seconds behind the winning team of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Tiger men placed fifth in the final NCAA team standings, an improvement from a sixth-place finish at last year’s Indoors, held at Terre Haute, Ind. Trinity’s women’s team finished in a tie for 48th place at this year’s event.

David Svoboda is the head coach of the Tiger men’s and women’s track and field teams.
