Tiger Trio Earns SCAC Swimming and Diving Honors
San Antonio - Trinity's Kevin Thomas, Katie Sheldon, and Lydia Jones all earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for their performances in swimming and diving last week at the UIW Cardinal Invitational.
Thomas and Jones (both first-years) earned SCAC Swimmer of the Week honors, while Sheldon (a sophomore) was named the SCAC Women's Diver of the Week.
Sheldon won the one-meter diving competition at the Cardinal Invitational, which was held at Palo Alto College on Saturday. She defeated teammates Ruth Hahn - a 2011 All-American - and Lynne Bettinger - a previous SCAC Diver of the Week - in the event, which also featured Division I and Division II athletes from the U.S. Air Force Academy (four total) and hosting University of Incarnate Word (three athletes).
Jones had several strong performances in the two-day meet, beginning with a 25.23 time as the leadoff leg of the 200 freestyle relay, then swam the 200 freestyle in 1:58.67 finish. She also scored a time of 54.99 in the 100 freestyle, and backed that up with a time of 54.87 to lead off the Tiger 400 freestyle relay team. In a busy meet that marked Trinity's final tunu-up for the SCAC Championships later this month, Jones also posted a time of 5:14.50 in the 500 freestyle.
Thomas paced the Tiger men's 200 freestyle relay with a conference-best 1:26.62 time, posting a 21.02 split in his leg of the race. Later in the meet, he recorded a 21.62 in the 50 freestyle individually, then sprinted to a 21.08 time in the 200 medley relay for the Tigers.
Trinity's men's and women's swimming & diving teams are led by Head Coach John Ryan and Diving Coach Stan Randall. The Tiger men and women will compete in the SCAC Champinships Feb. 15-18, in Rockwall, Texas.
