Tiger Men and Women Third at Cardinal Invitational
San Antonio - Trinity's men's and women's swimming & diving teams both finished third at the Cardinal Invitational, which concluded on Saturday evening.
Trinity faced off against Division I and Division II competition in the meet, which was hosted by the University of Incarnate Word (at Palo Alto College).
In Saturday's final day of competition, the Tigers had 18 swimmers and divers finish in the top five in their respective events.
The diving competition saw the most success for Trinity, as the Tiger women's divers finished in the top three spots in the one-meter event, led by Katie Sheldon's first-place finish. Ruth Hahn and Lynne Bettinger were second and third. On the three-meter board, Hahn was second, followed by Sheldon and Bettinger in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Men's divers Richard Hawley and Kevin Martin were fourth and fifth in the three-meter competition, while Martin bounced back with a second-place finish on the one-meter board.
In the women's swimming competition, Melanie Gustafson, Sarah Miller, and Lisa Tucci took second, third, and fifth in the 400 individual medley, while Kelly Holton was fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Jennifer Ince was fifth in the 200 backstroke.
For the men, Trinity's 800 freestyle relay team finished second. The relay team was composed of Alex Miranda, Matthew Wey, CJ Robison, and JJ Lubinski. Sean Fronczak was fifth in the 100 backstroke, and Andrew Battles was fourth in the 200 back. In addition to leading off the 800 free relay for the Tigers, Miranda also finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle, while teammate Lucas Belury earned third in the mile-long race.
Trinity's men's and women's teams will next compete at the 2012 SCAC Championships in Rockwall, Texas. The women will be looking for their ninth consecutive conference title, while the men will be seeking their first since 2004.
