Trinity Swimming & Diving Enjoys Another Successful SCAC Championships Meet

Louisville, Ky. - The Trinity Tigers women are once again the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving team champions.

Trinity won its seventh straight conference title, and 10th overall, at the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Tiger men were runners-up, for the fifth consecutive year. The four-day meet was held at the University of Louisville's Ralph Wright Natatorium.

The Tiger women scored 914 points in the nine-team field, beating second-place DePauw (865.5) by a 48.5-point margin. Trinity's men chalked up 891 points, and defending champion DePauw scored 987.5 (96.5-point margin).

 Trinity won 11 individual and relay championships, eight men's and three women's. All-SCAC honors were won in 31 events (16 men's and 15 women's). A total of 13 NCAA Division III "B" cut times were registered at the meet (eight men's, five women's).

Junior diver Hayley Emerick of Portland, Texas (Gregory-Portland), was named SCAC Female Diver of the Meet, for the third year in a row. Sophomore Alex Miranda of Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington), earned SCAC Male Swimmer of the Meet honors.

Emerick made SCAC diving history at the meet. She became the first female diver to win both competition boards for three consecutive years. Emerick captured the 3-meter board, registering 479.45, and the 1-meter, with a 469.45. A total of eight Tiger divers, six women and two men, also received NCAA consideration scores during the course of the season.

Miranda repeated as SCAC champion in two events: the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.72; NCAA "B" cut time), and the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.04; "B" cut; SCAC meet record). In addition, Miranda won the 400-yard individual medley (4:02.71; "B" cut; SCAC meet record). Miranda was also part of the second-place 800-yard freestyle relay team (6:58.02).  His teammates were sophomore Andrew Battles of Colleyville, Texas (Keller); senior Graham Mullings of Magnolia, Texas (Montgomery); and sophomore Matt Wey of Ridgewood, N.J. (Ridgewood).

The Tiger women won the 400-yard individual medley. First-year swimmer Lisa Tucci of Mission Hills, Kan. (Notre Dame de Sion), took the event in 4:36.61, and an NCAA "B" cut time. Tucci placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.37), and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.46).

Sophomore Kevin Martin of Corpus Christi, Texas (Ray), won the men's 1-meter di ving event, on the first day of competition. Martin, who earlier had earned an NCAA consideration score, registered a score of 448.35. He placed second on the 3-meter board (384.20).

 Sophomore Andrew Battles of Colleyville, Texas (Keller), defended his 1,650-yard freestyle championship, with a "B" cut mark of 16:03.89.

First-year Spencer Bard of Knoxville, Tenn. (Bearden), was the men's 100-yard butterfly champion, clocking in with a "B" cut time of 50.81 seconds.

Sean Fronczak, a first-year swimmer from Sunnyvale, Calif. (St. Francis), swam a "B' cut time in winning the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.01).

The first-place 400-yard medley relay team, with a "B" cut and SCAC-record time of 3:27.17., consisted of Bard; Fronczak; Mullings; and first-year Audel Mehrinfar of Houston (Strake Jesuit College Prep).

The NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 17-20 at Minneapolis.

Trinity is led by head swimming coach John Ryan and head diving coach Stan Randall. Leta Gatton is the assistant swimming coach.
