Trinity Softball Drops Two at LeTourneau Tournament

Longview, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers softball team lost two games Saturday at the rain-delayed LeTourneau University tournament.

Trinity (4-4) lost 7-0 to host LeTourneau, and then fell 6-2 to Hardin-Simmons. Originally, the Tigers were scheduled to play four games at the two-day event. Because of inclement weather, the schedule was revised for only Saturday games.

In the opener,  LeTourneau scored five runs in the third inning and two in the sixth. Tiger first-year catcher Ana Garcia of Austin, Texas (Bowie), batted 1-3, and cracked a double in the fifth inning. First-year right-hander Sarah Rabaey (1-2) of Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), went the distance and took the loss. Rabaey struck out three YellowJackets in the game.

LeTourneau scored five earned runs, put out 10 hits, committed no errors, and left six players on base. Trinity made three hits, one error, and stranded four batters.

Hardin-Simmons scored five runs in the top of the third inning, in the second game. Trinity answered in the bottom of the inning as first-year first baseman Megan Russell hit a two-RBI double to left center field. Sophomore outfielder Karen MacPherson and first-year outfielder Lindsay Weyand scored, as both players had swatted base hits. Trinity did not score again, and the Cowgirls added a run in the top of the seventh.

Russell, from Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell), hit 1-3, with a double and two RBIs. MacPherson and Weyand each batted 1-3 with one run scored. Both players hail from Allen, Texas (Allen).

First-year right-handed pitcher Sydney Friday (1-2) pitched seven innings and was charged with the loss. Friday, from Sugar Land, Texas (The Kinkaid School), allowed no earned runs in the game. She yielded five hits and only one walk, while striking out four batters. Friday now has 12 strikeouts on the season.

Hardin-Simmons made one error, and left six players on base. Trinity scored two earned runs, collected five hits, committed seven errors, while leaving five batters on base.

Trinity will host Texas Lutheran at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader.
