Trinity Softball Splits Doubleheader with Texas Lutheran
Seguin, Texas - The Trinity Tigers softball team split its season-opening doubleheader with the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs Saturday.
Texas Lutheran won the opener 7-3, and Trinity took the five-inning run-rule game 8-0. The Tigers make their home debut Tuesday by hosting Huston-Tillotson at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.
Tiger first-year right-hander Sydney Friday of Sugar Land, Texas (Clemens), made her collegiate debut by winning the second game. Friday hurled the five-inning shutout, and allowed one hit, two walks, and struck out five batters.
Senior designated hitter Caitlin Richards of San Antonio (Clark) hit 2-3 with one RBI, and scored a run. First-year catcher Ana Garcia of Austin, Texas (Bowie), batted 1-2 with two RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Karen MacPherson, who went 2-3, stole two bases in the game.
Trinity, which scored five runs in the first inning, produced four earned runs, eight hits, made no errors, and left eight players on base. Texas Lutheran committed one error and stranded two batters.
The Tigers scored first in the opener, putting up two runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Rachel Garrett of Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), provided the RBI, a fielder's choice. Texas Lutheran countered with three runs in the second, and four in the third, to take a 7-3 lead. The Tigers scored a run in the top of the third off an RBI single by first-year outfielder Lindsay Weyand of Allen, Texas (Allen). Weyand batted 1-3.
Trinity scored one earned run, produced five hits, made one error, and left 10 players on base. Texas Lutheran scored six earned runs, cracked 10 hits, committed one error, and stranded five players.
