Trinity Softball Drops Two at Austin College Saturday
Sherman, Texas – The Trinity Tigers softball team lost both ends of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to the Austin College Kangaroos Saturday at Old Settlers Park.
Trinity (10-18, 3-5 SCAC) swept a doubleheader from Austin College on Thursday, but settled for a weekend split after today's losses. The Tigers are tied for third place in the SCAC West Division with Hendrix College. Austin College, currently in fifth place, improved to 14-16 and 4-8 SCAC.
The Tigers scored in the first inning of the opening game on a solo home run by Megan Russell of Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell). Russell batted 2-3 in the game. Austin College took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and led 3-1 after a homer in the third. The Kangaroos added two more insurance runs in the sixth.
Trinity also took an early lead in the second game, as Russell smacked another first-inning homer, this one a two-run shot to right field. Russell batted 2-4 with four RBI in the second game. The Kangaroos tied the game with a pair of runs in the third, then the Tigers went back on top after their third home run of the day. Alexa Calderon of Eagle Pass, Texas (Eagle Pass), hit a leadoff home run to left center field in the inning. The Kangaroos tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, and the see-saw game continued with Trinity scoring again in the fifth. Austin College countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.
The Tigers regained the lead (6-5) with two runs in the top of the seventh, as Russell cracked a two-run double to left field. The Kangaroos came back to win the game in the seventh, taking advantage of Trinity's third error of the game to score a pair of unearned runs.
Trinity and Hendrix, the two teams tied for third in the division, will face off next weekend in Conway, Arkansas. The games will be on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers return home for the final series of the regular season on April 17-18 against Southwestern.
