Tigers Split Doubleheader With Millsaps to Open SCAC Play
San Antonio – The Trinity Tiger softball team split an opening Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon with the Millsaps Majors.
Millsaps won the first game 5-0, and Trinity took the second
7-4. The Tigers now stand at 8-10 and 1-1 SCAC, while the Majors
are 8-8 and 1-1 SCAC. The two teams conclude their season series
Saturday, with a doubleheader starting at noon.
The Majors scored five runs in the third inning of the first game,
mostly off of a grand slam by designated hitter Josie Matthews.
Tiger first-year third baseman Lindsay Weyand of Allen, Texas
(Allen), hit her team-best fourth double of the season down the
left-field line in the seventh inning.
First-year right-hander Sydney Friday of Sugar Land, Texas (Sugar Land), went the distance in the game, but took the loss. Friday (2-4) allowed four earned runs, on 10 hits, while also fanning 10 batters. Millsaps committed two errors, and left nine players on base. Trinity scattered four hits, made three errors, and left seven runners on base.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of the second half of the doubleheader, then answered a Millsaps run with two more Tiger scores in the third. First-year shortstop Becca Rush of Sugar Land, Texas (Travis), picked up her second RBI of the game in that inning. The Majors scored a run in the top half of the fourth, but the Tigers took command with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, to lead 7-2. Trinity scored three runs, on two hits, and two Millsaps errors.
First-year first baseman Megan Russell of Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell), accounted for three of the team's runs. Sophomore outfielder Karen MacPherson of Allen (Allen) scored two runs, and stole three bases. MacPherson, Trinity’s all-time stolen base leader, also stole a base in the first game and now stands at 15-15 on the bags.
First-year right-hander Sarah Rabaey of Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), captured the victory and improved to 2-3. Rabaey gave up three earned runs, on 11 hits, and had three strikeouts. Millsaps committed four errors, and stranded seven players.
The Tigers scored two earned runs off the two Millsaps pitchers, collected eight hits, made two errors, and left eight runners on base.
