Trinity Softball Splits DH at Schreiner Wednesday
Kerrville, Texas – The Trinity Tigers split a non-conference doubleheader with the Schreiner Mountaineers Wednesday night.
Schreiner won the opener 10-2 (six innings, run rule), and Trinity took the second-game slugfest 13-6. The Tigers (6-8) previously split a DH with the Mountaineers (3-5) Feb. 20 at Trinity.
In the first inning of Tuesday’s opening game, the Tigers opened the scoring as first-year Megan Russell smacked an RBI-double. Schreiner also scored in the opening frame and took the lead with six runs in the inning. Trinity scored its only other run in the fourth inning, with a RBI single by sophomore outfielder Karen MacPherson. Sophomore right-hander Brittany Losey (1-1) was the starter and was charged with the loss.
Senior designatted hitter Caitlin Richards batted 2-2, along with drawing a walk.
Both Trinity runs were unearned and the team collected six hits, made two errors, and left nine players on base. Schreiner scored 10 earned runs, made 11 hits, four errors, and left 10 runners on base.
The second game was a complete turnaround, as the Tigers scored four runs in the first inning. Trinity produced four runs, on one hit, compounded by four Schreiner errors. The Tigers took a 6-0 lead with two runs in the second inning, and then scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Schreiner came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Tigers still led 10-5.
Russell swatted a two-RBI single in a three-run sixth inning, putting the Tigers ahead 13-5 at the time Rachel Garrett, from Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), hit 3-4 with one RBI, and four runs scored. Russell, from Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell), batted 2-5 with five RBIs, and two runs. Ana Garcia, from Austin, Texas (Bowie), went 2-5 with three RBIs, and one run.
Tiger sophomore right-hander Annie Clarke of Austin (Anderson) went the distance and earned the victory. Clarke, who remained undefeated at 3-0, allowed five earned runs, seven hits, four walks, and struck out a batter in seven innings of work.
Trinity scored six earned runs, accounted for 13 hits, made one error, and left 11 players on base. Schreiner was plagued by seven errors, and left 10 runners on base.
The Tigers will host Midland Lutheran (Neb.) in a doubleheader Wednesday, March 17.
