Tiger Softball Swept by Evangel Saturday Afternoon

San Antonio - The Evangel Crusaders won a non-conference softball doubleheader with the Trinity Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Evangel (4-5), a member of the NAIA, won the opener 4-0, and the second 8-0 (five innings, run rule). The Tigers, members of the NCAA Division III, now stand at 5-7.

The opening game was tight, as Evangel scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning. Tiger first-year right-hander Sydney Friday (1-3) pitched a perfect game through the first four innings. Friday, from Sugar Land, Texas (The Kinkaid School), allowed two earned runs, no walks, and struck out four batters.

Trinity's only hit in the game was a double by first-year outfielder Lindsay Weyand of Allen, Texas (Allen). Weyand cracked the double to left-center in the second inning. Senior designated hitter Caitlin Richards of San Antonio (Clark) drew three of the Tigers' seven walks in the game. Sophomore outfielder Karen MacPherson of Allen (Allen) registered her ninth stolen base of the season, in as many attempts.

The Tigers committed two errors, and left seven players on base. Evangel had no errors and stranded two batters.

The Crusaders scored a run in the third inning of the second game, and blew it open with seven runs in the fifth. Evangel's half-inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by outfielder Sarah Doyle.

Tiger first-year right-hander Sarah Rabaey (1-3) of Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock), was the starter and took the loss. Rabaey pitched 4.1 innings, and allowed two earned runs, six hits, no walks and fanned five batters. Sophomore right-hander Annie Clarke of Austin, Texas (Anderson), pitched the final 2/3 of an inning.

Trinity was again limited to one hit, a single by Richards in the second inning.

The Tigers made five errors, and left one player on base. Evangel scored two earned runs, collected seven hits, committed no errors, and left five batters on base.

Trinity travels to Kerrville, Texas, Wednesday, for a 5 p.m. doubleheader with Schreiner.  Schreiner and Trinity recently split a doubleheader in San Antonio, and Wednesday's games will finish off the regular season series. The Tigers return home March 17 to host Midland Lutheran in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
