Tigers Open Home Schedule With DH Sweep of Huston Tillotson
San Antonio - The Trinity Tiger softball team opened up its home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Huston Tillotson University on Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity (3-1) won both games 8-0 in five innings, and has won three consecutive games after losing the 2010 season opener.
The Tigers opened up the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one, then added two runs in the second and fourth. In the second game, Trinity scored twice in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings to earn the run-rule victory.
Brittany Losey (1-0) and Annie Clarke (1-0) each tossed three-hit shutouts on the day. Clarke recorded six strikeouts, while Losey finished with four. Losey escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, while Clarke didn't allow a runner past second base in the finale.
Sophomores Karen MacPherson and Rachel Garrett had two hits and two runs each in the opening game, while first-year Becca Rush was 2-3 with three RBI. MacPherson and Garrett, who combined for 50 stolen bases last year, each had at least one steal in both of today's games.
MacPherson's three steals pushes her past Kate Wright for the Trinity career record for stolen bases. Currently, MacPherson now has 36 steals in her short career.
In game two, MacPherson scored three more runs, while Garrett added two more hits and two RBI to her solid day.
Senior Caitlin Richards was 2-3 with three RBI in the second game, while first-year Ana Garcia was 2-3 with two runs scored.
Trinity will continue its four-game home stand with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Schreiner. The teams will begin the opening game at 1:00 p.m. Trinity will hit the road the following weekend, heading out to the LeTourneau Tournament.
