San Antonio - The seventh-ranked Trinity men's tennis team defeated Division II St. Mary’s University 8-1 in an inter-divisional tennis match on Thursday evening.
The Tigers improved to 16-6 with their second straight victory, winning for the sixth time in the last seven matchups. St. Mary’s came into the match ranked No. 27 in Division II.
The Tigers opened today's action by sweeping all three doubles points, taking the early advantage. Greg Haugen and Jordan Mayer won the No. 2 line 9-7, rallying after being down 4-1 and 6-3 during the match, finishing off Trinity's doubles sweep.
Mayer later clinched the match with his singles win from line five, improving to 16-2 on the season. Curtis opened singles play with a win at line six. Both Tiger players won in straight sets to put the team up 5-0 at the time. Aaron Skinner won from his fourth position in the singles lineup, then St. Mary's scored its only win of the day to make it 6-1.
Paxton Deuel upped his season singles record to 13-6 with a three-set thriller to finish off the scoring for the Tigers, rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 12-10 win.
Trinity will host two matches on Saturday, beginning with 20th-ranked University of Texas-Tyler at 10:00 a.m. That afternoon, the Tigers will face off against Texas Lutheran University.
